In Republican-era China, Su Wanqing, a radio host, hears a familiar male voice every night while reading listeners' letters—it's the voice of her fiancé Gu Zhao, who disappeared three years ago. One day, Shen Shiyan walks into her studio: he looks nothing like Gu, but has the exact same voice and swears he's never met her. Digging into Shen's past, Su finds "shadows" of Gu: the same childhood home, the same pocket watch, even the same love for jasmine tea. Stranger still, Shen has recurring dreams of a girl named "Wanqing" waiting for him in an old alley.
