In a state-owned machinery factory in the 1980s, apprentice Lin Qiang is entrusted by his dying master to secure a housing allocation for the master's wife Li Shulan and her daughter. Director Wang of the factory office abuses his power—he not only tries to seize the house but also frames Lin for "coveting the master's wife." Lin uses his master's skills to help workers and gain support, then uncovers evidence that Wang embezzled the master's pension. When he slams the property deed and pension on Wang's desk, Li hands him a hot meal with teary eyes: "What they call 'stealing' is my willingness to be with you." The "immorality" in rumors turns out to be the hottest true love between two struggling souls.
