When the emperor suddenly dies, the powerful Xiao clan seizes control of the court. Six-year-old Li Zhao, the imperial grandson, is secretly brought back to the palace. On the surface, he’s a cute kid obsessed with osmanthus cakes, but he has a photographic memory—sneaking through the imperial study’s secret files to expose the Xiao clan’s corruption with “childish remarks,” and setting a trap at the empress dowager’s birthday banquet to make traitors confess. Su Wan, a cold and reserved female seal-keeper, is ordered to spy on him. Yet as she helps him steal cakes and hide evidence, she discovers the little grandchild’s loneliness: he cries at night holding his late father’s jade pendant, and saves the last piece of his favorite cake for “Sister Su.” When the Xiao clan tries to kill Li Zhao, Su Wan disobeys orders for the first time, hiding him in a secret tunnel in the cold palace. The little kid grabs her sleeve and says in a tiny voice, “When I become emperor, I’ll make you my empress.” Amidst court intrigue, the cute kid’s journey to reform the court hides the sweetest dependence and fiercest protection.
