When Lin Wan took her last breath in a 1988 hospital bed, she was still thinking of saving the last half piece of malted milk for her husband Chen Jianguo—after a lifetime of toil, supporting her sister-in-law’s education and paying her in-laws’ debts, all she got was her husband’s infidelity and her in-laws’ mockery. Opening her eyes again, she’s back at the 1975 educated youth camp, clutching the just-received 3-jin coarse grain coupon. This time, she’s tearing up the script of “living for others”: reclaiming the city return quota stolen by her sister-in-law, selling herbs from the back mountain to support herself, and sneering at Chen Jianguo’s sweet words—she’ll settle every debt from her past life; for this life, she’ll step firmly and live as her own light.
