Lin Zhao is the poorest clerk in the capital, earning only 3,000 wen a month—so little he has to save for half a year just to buy a silver hairpin for his childhood sweetheart Su Wan. When he returns home for the New Year, he stumbles upon a price crash caused by a flood of silver tribute from a neighboring country: a string of cash can buy ten catties of pork, and his 3,000 wen suddenly becomes a "village fortune"! Villagers crowd around him, and even Su Wan blushes, praising him for being "capable". Lin Zhao awkwardly lies about "making a fortune in the capital" while secretly using his "fortune" to buy Su Wan a hairpin. On New Year's Eve, Su Wan takes his hand and says, "I saw the pickle jerky in your sleeve long ago—your effort to save money for me is more precious than any fortune." Turns out Su Wan knew the truth about the price crash all along; she played along to protect his pride.
