Lin Chuan is reborn in a poor rural village in 1983. While squatting at the village entrance eating cold cornbread, he activates the "1983 Fortune System"—he must earn his "first pot of gold" by selling popsicles and setting up stalls to unlock skills. But the system’s tasks are all absurd: "Smile with eight teeth when selling popsicles," "Charge 5 more cents for helping Aunt Zhang lead her donkey." Just as he sets up his stall, he’s pushed aside by Su Xiaomei, who ran away from her marriage—this girl, holding her household register, scolds him for "taking up space," yet when he’s blackmailed by local hooligans, she picks up a shoulder pole to protect him. They go from "stall rivals" to "fortune partners," dealing with the system’s funny tasks, dodging Su Xiaomei’s matchmaking in-laws, and striving to save money in the wave of reform and opening up. But when Lin Chuan finally saves 1000 yuan, the system suddenly pops up: "Task Upgrade: Marry Su Xiaomei, or all wealth will be cleared?!"
