Lin Wan runs her grandfather's old puppet shop, clinging to the fading craft of "palm puppets." She laughs off her grandfather's dying words—"the puppet holds a 'love string' that binds true fate"—until a rainy night when she rescues the injured Gu Cheng. To her shock, this cold, mysterious man looks exactly like the "phoenix puppet" she just finished! Even more absurd: whenever she moves the puppet's strings, Gu Cheng involuntarily copies the actions—if she makes the puppet serve tea, Gu Cheng suddenly stands up with a teacup; if she tugs the strings to spin, he spins three rounds in the shop! Gu Cheng, hiding from family assassins, pretends to be a shop assistant, but the "puppet link" forces him to stick with Lin Wan. They go from bickering to secretly falling for each other, until the assassins track them down. Lin Wan then discovers the truth: the "love string" isn't for binding love—it's for her to use the puppet to take a deadly hit for Gu Cheng...
