In the Republican-era Beijing, warlord young marshal Gu Chengchuan (played by Huang Youtian) disguises himself as an opera fan to get close to Shen Zhixia (played by Zhu Moyan), the top actress of a opera troupe—her family is the "murderer" of his father. But as they spend time together, Gu is gradually moved by Shen's purity and passion, wavering in his revenge plan. Little does he know, Shen has long seen through his identity; yet, because of a childhood rescue by Gu, she hides her love in her opera lines. Just as Gu is about to destroy the Shen family with "evidence" of the massacre, he uncovers the reversed truth: his own family is the real culprit, and Shen is the true victim of the extermination. Caught between national hatred and suppressed love, can they retrieve their unburned hearts amid Beijing's smoke and lies?
