Su Wan marries into the Northern Town Marquis Mansion in place of her sister, facing the "H活阎王" Gu Yan and the mockery of the marquis's mother and scheming concubines. But she refuses to play by the rules—when the old lady calls her "crude", she serves her self-made tonic and retorts, "You need to fix your sharp tongue"; when a concubine frames her for theft, she digs out the concubine's hidden account books; even when Gu Yan refuses to take his medicine with a cold face, she grabs his collar and forces him to drink. However, Gu Yan, once cold as ice, is gradually warmed by her—he quietly puts a cloak on her when she stays up sewing, and publicly defends her when she's framed. When the truth of the surrogate marriage is revealed and a killing order from the capital chases them, Su Wan realizes that what she's really taming isn't the "defiance" in the mansion, but Gu Yan's heart that dares not love again.
