In the freezing winter of 1985, adopted daughter Su Wan flees her mountain village to escape an arranged marriage. Rescued by the taciturn ex-soldier Lu Xiao, she's forced to pose as his wife in a shabby courtyard. Though he labors at the docks, his elegant calligraphy betrays refinement; beneath patched overalls, gun-calloused muscles tell another story. When her stepbrother's ox-cart closes in, Lu Xiao roars to life on a military motorcycle, shielding her in a cloud of dust. As the haze clears, memory strikes: beneath magnolia trees in a guarded compound, the gentle youth who once braided her hair now stands at attention – saluting a general in crisp uniform.
