Modern socially anxious programmer Mao Zhiyuan wakes up in 1985 as a "troublesome young worker" at the state-owned Hongguang Factory. His only asset is a phone full of hip-hop videos—confiscated by security for being a "bourgeois tool" right after he arrives. To get his phone back, he’s forced to substitute for Qi Huizhao’s partner in a district talent show. Qi, the factory’s famous "anti-disco vanguard," deems his hip-hop "indecent." From constant bickering to secret practice, they adapt her folk dance with hip-hop—only to be shut down by leaders for "promoting obscenity." Just as the show seems doomed, Qi secretly brings her father’s old recorder and records their hybrid dance. Will the applause for their retro disco-meets-popping routine break 1980s prejudices? And will Mao’s time-travel secret stay in that neon-lit skating rink, as he grows closer to Qi?
