In 1990, at the family compound of a Northeast China steel mill, Shen Jianguo—a crew-cut lad from the mill—squatted outside the alley with his quarterly bonus, waiting for Lin Xiaoman, the girl who always saved him the crispest pancake but had suddenly started avoiding him. Xiaoman’s father was seriously ill, so she’d secretly dropped out to run a stall and even lied about “liking a clothing seller” to push him away. But when Jianguo searched all of Tiexi District and found Xiaoman selling frozen pears in the snow, his “steel mill succession notice” met her frostbitten hands. No matter how cold the era’s wind blew, it couldn’t extinguish the heartbeat hidden in their cotton-padded coats—and what they were betting on was whether their courage to “carry this together” could overcome all obstacles.
