In the late 1970s, Lin Wanwan is reborn on the day she just married into the Chen family—her husband Chen Jianguo is having an affair with educated youth Zhou Min and even trying to sell her dowry jade bracelet to buy a sewing machine for his lover. Awakened from her previous life of being tormented to death, she tears up the marriage certificate, smashes the Chen family’s broken bowls, and returns to her parents’ home with her dowry. Using her past-life memory of intangible cultural heritage crafts, she makes baby shoes from scrap cloth and weaves bamboo baskets to sell in the county, earning her first pot of gold. She also meets Gu Jingchuan, a retired soldier—this silent man who secretly protects her from hooligans and fixes her fence makes her feel loved for the first time. When Chen Jianguo begs for reconciliation after gambling away his family’s wealth, Lin Wanwan sits on the back of Gu Jingchuan’s bicycle, waving her business license with a smile: ‘Sorry, I’m a self-employed boss now. I don’t marry men who live off women.’
