Su Wan, a down-and-out young lady in the capital, had just been jilted by her fiancé when she was pestered by Fu Yanting—the rumored cold-blooded young marshal. He snatches her osmanthus cake, insists he’s the one who saved her life (even when she argues), and even leads his soldiers to block her family’s gate when she’s forced into a marriage: “Su Wan is mine—touch her, and I’ll flatten your threshold.” But Su Wan doesn’t know: Fu Yanting keeps a glass marble she gave him ten years ago in his uniform pocket, and a crumpled note under his pillow—written by her at seven, saying “I want to marry a hero.” His “fighting and snatching” isn’t greed; it’s terror—terror that if he’s even a second late, he’ll lose the little girl who once squatted in the alley and handed him hot porridge when he was a starving street kid.
