Chen Jianguo, a taxi driver for 20 years, hides a secret—he was once the former president of Tiansheng Group, a百亿-dollar empire. He missed his son’s growth while building his career, so he deliberately “became poor” to be an ordinary dad who could pick his kid up from school and cook tomato and egg noodles. But his newly graduated son, Chen Yang, despises him for “not being able to afford a 100,000-yuan bride price” and “losing face.” To curry favor with a rich woman’s daughter, Chen Yang throws his father’s old coat on the ground in public, yelling, “I don’t have a poor dad like you.” Until Chen Yang is demanded a million-yuan “reputation compensation” by the woman and squats on the street crying, Chen Jianguo silently uses a black card to pay the debt and hands over a yellowed photo album of their father-son moments: “I never wanted to tie you with wealth—I was just afraid you’d wake up and not see me again, like when you were little.” Staring at his father’s crow’s feet, Chen Yang suddenly remembers the man who secretly put a toy car in his schoolbag as a kid but didn’t dare say, “Dad will play with you.”
