Lin Yan, a poor scholar who failed the imperial exam repeatedly, offended the Minister of Personnel while saving a vulnerable girl before the exam. On the day of his failure, he was chased and beaten to the palace wall, accidentally breaking into the bedroom of Imperial Concubine Su Wancong. Su Wancong's father and brother were framed and killed by a powerful official, and she needed a "harmless pawn" to infiltrate the court—she saw Lin Yan's toughness and talent, and packaged him as "the emperor's favorite male companion". Lin Yan went from being laughed at by officials as a "male favorite" to using tricks to bring down the Minister and avenge Su Wancong's family, gradually becoming the most powerful man in the court. But at the peak of his power, he discovered that he had already fallen in love with Su Wancong, and behind her "utilization" lay a deep affection she dared not express—when power and true love collide, can they break the fate of being "pawns"?
