28-year-old unemployed Su Xiao turned her shabby apartment balcony into a tiny writing studio to make a living by writing online novels. However, she was reported for "illegal balcony conversion" by Zhou Meilan, the meddlesome neighbor upstairs, and the city inspectors issued a three-day rectification order—that was her only lifeline. Just as residents surrounded her door calling her "heartless," Zhou Meilan's daughter-in-law spoke up: "Xiao Jie's balcony is where my autistic son paints—he won't say a word anywhere else." Zhou Meilan also burst into tears and apologized: "I was afraid they'd demolish my husband's illegal pigeon coop, so I tried to divert attention..." A farce uncovered the warm secrets of the old building, and the once-indifferent neighbors finally sat down to communicate.
