In the famine era, Chen Aniu risks everything to feed his pregnant wife Lin Xiulan: he scours wild lands for grass roots and tree bark, even sneaks into the landlord’s house to steal sour rice bran—even when he’s so hungry that stars float in his vision, he’ll cool the only sip of warm porridge before giving it to her. But just then, he learns his long-lost sister Xiaotao, missing for three years, was kidnapped by the landlord to be a “good-luck maid” and is about to be buried alive with the landlord’s dead son. Torn between his starving pregnant wife and his dying sister, Chen Aniu clutches the half piece of cornbread in his arms and grits his teeth: Tonight, he’ll break into the landlord’s house—even if it costs him his life, he’ll feed his wife first, then rescue his sister!
