But now, Lin Shen stands at the shop door in a suit with a demolition contract, with excavators ready to devour the old alley behind him. Xiaotang clutches grandma’s silver hairpin, eyes red: "Did you forget the promise to wait for the osmanthus to steam open together?" Lin Shen’s eyes redden, but he shoves an old photo into her hand—it’s a childhood photo of them holding osmanthus cakes, with a note on the back: "I’m trying to save the alley." The wind carries osmanthus fragrance into the shop, and the cakes in the steamer are steaming, just like that summer years ago.
