By the side of Princess Anyang of the Great Zhao Dynasty, there is A Xuan—a stunning shadow guard known as the most beautiful in the world. Rescued by the princess from a pile of corpses years ago as a dying soldier, he grew up with a rebellious streak: when she practices swordplay, he leans in to hand her a handkerchief, saying, ‘A shadow guard’s duty is to keep the master safe’; when she’s forced to drink, he snatches the cup and downs it, claiming, ‘Testing poison is my job’; even when the emperor arranges her marriage, he barges into the palace and declares, ‘Whoever marries the princess must ask me first.’ Everyone scolds him for insubordination, but only the princess knows—this seemingly carefree guard once took an assassin’s knife for her in the dark, knelt three days and nights for a healer when she was gravely ill, and took all the blame when she was framed. Until assassins attacked during a hunt: A Xuan took a fatal sword strike for her, smiling as he lay dying in her arms, ‘Finally, I don’t need excuses to be close to you.’ Only then did the princess collapse—all those ‘insubordinate’ acts were his ten years of hidden love.
