Su Wanyi, a concubine's daughter of the Hou Mansion, always feels targeted by Prince Rong Jing—he forces her to copy ten volumes of women's rules, punishes her to practice sword until midnight, and even shoves medical books at her. Until the Hou Mansion is surrounded for treason, she hides in the wood shed trembling. Rong Jing breaks in with imperial guards, holding the dried green plum she gave him at seven: "The day you took an assassin's knife for me, I decided—I want you to be able to protect yourself, to stand at the highest position, so I can marry you openly." It turns out all those "targetings" are his ten-year-hidden tenderness. Even his three-year fight for the crown prince position is just to take her into the East Palace. What she doesn't know is that at seven, he already hid her portrait in his close-fitting pouch.
