Lin Zhao, the most negligible scribe in the capital, accidentally triggers an underworld contract while collecting his wrongfully killed friend's body, becoming an "intern ghost messenger" who must redress grievances for unjustly dead souls to survive 49 days. His first mission interrupts Su Wantang, the prime minister's daughter, "attempting suicide," and he's forced into a "life-and-death pact"—if she dies, he vanishes too. To stay alive, Lin Zhao pretends to be her personal servant and sticks by her, only to discover her "suicide" is a ruse—she's investigating a court corruption case linked to the massacre of his family. When Su Wantang is dragged into the succession struggle, Lin Zhao realizes he was long chosen by the underworld: he's not just guarding a soul, but the person he's protected in past and present lives, and the fate of all living beings.
