Shen Zhao, a prodigal young master who idles away his days fighting cocks and walking dogs in the capital, accidentally knocks over a fortune-teller—and is forced to take the token of Yuling Sect’s leader. The old man, it turns out, is the retired former sect leader, who named him the successor on his deathbed! But the sect elders dismiss him as a "good-for-nothing" and plot to oust him; Su Wanqing, the cold and aloof senior sister, mocks him, certain he’ll ruin the sect. However, Shen Zhao—who’s been pretending to be a wastrel to hide his talent after his father’s murder—uses his street smarts to outwit the elders, cures Su’s cold poison, and uncovers his father’s killer. When enemy forces attack, Shen Zhao reveals an imperial edict: he’s long struck a deal with the emperor to use the sect to stabilize the kingdom. As Su watches his back, she realizes she’s already fallen for this "unreliable" young master.
