Xiao Yan, a young emperor striving to stabilize his kingdom, is suddenly accosted by two strangers in odd clothes calling him "great-grandson"—Lin Xiaoman and Gu Zhao, modern archaeologists who traveled through time via an ancient mirror and mistakenly took Xiao Yan as their ancestor. Xiao Yan initially plans to punish them for treason, but soon discovers their modern knowledge can solve droughts and repel enemies, forcing him to cooperate. As they spend time together, Xiao Yan falls for the straightforward Xiaoman, though she keeps mentioning "going back to the modern world." Just as his uncle's usurpation plot is exposed, the ancient mirror glows—revealing that in a past life, Xiao Yan was Xiaoman's lover. He sent her to the modern world to protect her from war, and this time travel is his way of proposing with his kingdom to rekindle their love.
