Emperor Shen Yan, newly ascended but powerless, faces corrupt officials holding power, enemy states eyeing his kingdom, and even poisoned meals. Then two girls appear: Wanwan, a maid who sneaks him warm sugar cakes, saying, "You saved my life once—I'll guard you forever"—her soft fists can catch an assassin's knife. Su Shiyu, a 16-year-old prodigy who strides in stepping on a corrupt official's head, solves a century-old border crisis and coldly demands he play chess with her daily. Shen Yan thinks he must choose between the "sweet cotton-padded jacket" or the "genius," until one night he catches Wanwan shielding Su Shiyu with a sword. He learns Wanwan is the top assassin "Hidden Fox," who's already spread the officials' crimes across the court; Su Shiyu is her senior sister, pretending to be cold to avoid scaring him. When the corrupt officials fall, the two kneel with phoenix coronets: "We've secured your kingdom—now can you choose us?"
