In 1957, deep in the Yimeng Mountains, Chen Dagen, a mountain runner, saved two jin of pork for half a year—finally enough to “exchange” for a wife. But the girl who arrived was Lin Zhixia, a city girl fleeing an arranged marriage. She despised his calloused hands like tree stumps; he hated that she didn’t know mountain fungi yet rambled about “new ideas”. He braved rain to walk 10 miles for her soap; she secretly mended his tattered coat with tiny, neat stitches. When Lin’s ex-fiancé came looking for her, Chen held his shotgun and yelled, “She’s my wife!” Only then did they realize: the pork was never a transaction—it was two hearts finding warmth in the harsh mountains.
