Tasks range from fixing a neighbor's drafty heater, delivering frozen pear sets to lonely elders, to watching a candied hawker's stall (and dealing with candy-stealing kids)—all "thankless" jobs. Tiezhu persists, winning neighbors' approval and falling for Xiao Shuang, a straightforward frozen pear seller.
