In Republican-era Shanghai, Su Li's brother is paraded by gangsters over a gambling debt, threatened with broken legs if 30,000 silver dollars aren't paid in three days. Desperate, Su Li sells herself to the Paramount Dance Hall, only to meet undercover Young Marshal Gu Zhao on her first night. Gu Zhao pays her debt but traps her, claiming "gratitude needs repayment with one's body." Su Li tries to escape, but Gu Zhao presses closer—he wants not her, but a military map left by her father. When the lie is exposed and she realizes she loves Gu Zhao, gang assassinations and military conspiracies strike. She finally understands: beneath this "deadly entanglement" lie more painful love and hate than selling herself ever was.
