Su Wan, the exiled princess of Nanzhao, hides as a folk doctor to survive. She accidentally rescues Gu Zhao—the cold-blooded general of Beiyan who once destroyed her kingdom. Gu Zhao falls in love at first sight but dares not reveal his identity, guarding her silently as a “passerby”. When Su Wan learns the truth, she’s torn between hatred for her ruined country and affection for the warmth he gave her. When the Beiyan emperor orders a massacre of Nanzhao survivors, Gu Zhao betrays the throne without hesitation, using his military power to protect Su Wan and all the survivors—only to be given poisoned wine by the emperor. On his deathbed, Su Wan finally learns: he destroyed Nanzhao to stop the tyranny of her father, the former emperor of Nanzhao, and all his “ruthlessness” was always to give her a chance to live.
