In the isolated Taohua Village of the 1980s-1990s, Lin Wan returns home after her father's sudden mysterious death—he heard the "midnight bell" from the old ancestral hall for three consecutive nights before dying, and villagers call it the "death-inviting bell." She reunites with her childhood sweetheart Chen Mo, now a village doctor; they hold a grudge over a past misunderstanding but team up to investigate. Her father's leftover account book hides clues of embezzled relief funds, and her mother's "accidental drowning" years ago is also linked. As they dig deeper, the village chief's obstruction, anonymous threats, and a secret warehouse under the ancestral hall emerge... When the bell-ringer's identity is revealed, the sins and hidden feelings masked by the bell will finally tear through the darkness at dawn.
