Su Xiao, who just traveled back to a poor mountain village in the 1980s, faced her brother's life-threatening illness with no money for treatment—until she suddenly gained the ability to talk to plants. She heard cabbages crying for manure to taste sweet, peach trees complaining that Salvia miltiorrhiza (a valuable herb) was buried under their roots, and even an old locust tree revealing there were Qing Dynasty porcelain jars under a hillside mound. Using these plant “tips,” she dug herbs to save her brother, grew off-season vegetables to earn her first pot of gold, and found antiques by chance. But villagers called her “possessed,” the village bully tried to steal her “secrets,” and even her father feared she’d “bring disaster.” Undeterred, Su Xiao turned their shabby hut into a two-story house, took her family from eating chaff to having meat every day, and even led the whole village to grow specialty orchards. It turned out that talking to plants wasn’t “evil”—it was God’s “comeback code” for poor kids!
