In 1945, the final year of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Su Qingluan—an underground Communist intelligence agent disguised as a wealthy merchant’s daughter in southern Jiangsu—is forced to marry Gu Zhaoting, the young marshal of a northern Jiangsu warlord, to steal intelligence on Japanese military supplies.
