Gu Hanyuan, daughter of a general, and Xiao Jingxing, Prince of Jing'an, were childhood sweethearts and engaged. But on the eve of their wedding, Xiao suddenly handed her a letter of breaking off the engagement, saying, "I'm marrying the prime minister's daughter to help me seize the throne." Heartbroken, Hanyuan volunteered to guard the border, where she spent seven years, turning from a delicate girl into the "Iron-Clad Cold General."
