Modern programmer Zhou Ming is tormented by his future mother-in-law Chen Xiufen's dying regret: "I didn't dare to choose my own path." Accidentally activating his grandma's old necklace, he travels back to a 1973 educated youth camp. There, 20-year-old Chen Xiufen—a stubborn young woman—is having her work points revoked for refusing the village secretary's son's forced marriage, even facing the loss of her winter grain. Worse, she will be permanently disabled saving Zhou Ming's mother from drowning, the root of her later tragedy. Zhou Ming poses as a "sent-down cadre" to help her: fighting the village bully for a spot in a workers-peasants-soldiers university while trying to prevent the fateful accident. But the more he interacts with Chen Xiufen, the more he discovers—the "city scholar" she secretly loved back then looks 70% like him! Now he must not only protect his young future mother-in-law but also help her regain the courage to choose her own life.
