58-year-old taxi driver Lao Zhou is retiring tomorrow, but his last ride is 7-year-old Xiao Man, unconscious with a high fever—her mom, an ER doctor, is in surgery saving a crash victim. Lao Zhou is hit by a memory: a decade ago, he missed his daughter’s final moments because he was 10 minutes late. Clenching his teeth, he takes shortcuts, runs red lights, even drives onto a pedestrian street, yelling “The kid needs help!” Strangers—delivery workers, square dancers—form a human corridor to clear his way. When Xiao Man is wheeled into the ER, Lao Zhou collapses in the hallway, and his phone pings with his late daughter’s voice: “Dad, help someone next time.”
