In 1945, at the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Jiangcheng was enveloped in darkness. Zhou Mingyu, an underground Communist, was ordered to pose as a fake couple with Li Xuemei, a progressive student, for an undercover mission. One was as rigorous as a "cold stone", the other as passionate as a "flame". Their first meeting was full of friction: Li Xuemei found Zhou Mingyu too dull, while Zhou Mingyu feared her impulsiveness would blow their cover. But when secret agents suddenly checked household registrations, when intelligence was hidden in a baby's swaddle, and when Zhou Mingyu shielded Li Xuemei from the enemy's interrogation, the gap between the "fake couple" slowly vanished. Those reminders to "hold hands when going out" and those habits of "leaving a light on for late returns" were faint lights quietly shining in the dark. They didn't know if they would be caught in the next intelligence delivery, but they believed: every faint light gathered together could burn through the darkness over Jiangcheng and usher in the victory of the coming spring.
