Lin Xiaoman, a modern pastry chef, accidentally transmigrates into Zhou Yuan, a penniless Ming scholar, while staying up late to develop a sugar recipe. He wakes up to a dilapidated home, with his wife A Ruan bedridden with tuberculosis and no money for medicine. Desperate, he uses modern sugar-making skills to make sticky candy and fruit sugar, which sell well in the county, earning his first pot of gold. But just as he gets enough for medicine, A Ruan's condition worsens, and the county school teacher threatens to expel him for “abandoning studies for business”. Zhou Yuan has to peddle sugar by day and study by oil lamp at night—can he save his wife and top the prefectural exam?
