Lin Fugui, a lame man at the village end who makes a living collecting firewood, is always bullied by Zhou Laohu, the village tyrant—called a "wimp," robbed of his firewood. This time, Zhou goes too far: he steals Fugui's hidden grain and frames him, wanting to punish him in the ancestral hall. But Fugui is ready: he secretly put Zhou's never-leaving jade pendant in the grain bag and asked a bullied kid to hide behind the firewood pile to witness. When Zhou yells in the ancestral hall to break Fugui's legs, Fugui takes out the jade pendant, and the kid cries out to identify Zhou. The village erupts in an uproar; Zhou's wife slaps him, and Zhou collapses. Fugui clutches the grain bag, his voice trembling but firm: "I'm poor but honest; you're rich but wicked—today, everyone sees your true face!"
