Chen Mo, a struggling young man, has been working overtime until midnight lately, only to find his beautiful wife Su Xiaotang sneaking out every night. Gossip from neighbors fuels his anxiety—could his gentle wife really be having an affair? He follows her to the shabby "Midnight Dumpling Shop" in the east of the city, and what he sees shocks him: Su Xiaotang, wearing an apron, is kneading dough in front of the stove, her movements clumsy but earnest, even not noticing when her finger gets scalded by boiling water. It’s not until the shop owner sighs and reveals the truth: Su Xiaotang knows Chen Mo wants to save money for his own repair shop. Afraid of hurting his pride by giving him her money directly, she took a part-time job at her distant relative’s shop, working until 2 AM every night just to earn some "invisible subsidies." When Chen Mo finds the envelope Su Xiaotang hid in his toolbox—full of crumpled change and a note that says "Go get ’em, hubby"—he holds his wife tightly with red eyes, realizing the most precious love is the "secret care" hidden in the late-night smoke and fire.
