In the late autumn of 1982, Lin Xiaoman, an educated youth, didn’t “till the land” like her peers after going to the countryside—she learned antique restoration from the village’s old carpenter, fixing Uncle Wang’s broken-legged porcelain bowl and Grandma Zhang’s dowry silver lock. But troubles came one after another: the team accused her of “slacking off” and wanted to transfer her to the pig farm; Er Zhuzi threatened to smash her “pile of junk”; an antique dealer offered her fifty yuan to buy her hidden Ming Dynasty lacquer box. Lin hid the lacquer box in the kang hole and exchanged food coupons for Uncle Li’s old wooden armchair—these “junk” were the roots of her ancestors, but in an era where even food was scarce, who would understand her dream of relics hidden in a tattered cloth bag? Can she protect these treasures and build the secretly planned collection kingdom?
