Lin Xiaoman, a modern fair assessment specialist, traveled back in time while staying up late to revise a fairness plan, becoming "Li Qingke"—a woman disguised as a man who "cheated" her way to being the top scholar (Zhuangyuan) in ancient times. Upon entering the court, she finds all officials are protégés of the powerful prime minister, poor scholars have no chance to take the imperial exam, and her "cheating" identity could be exposed at any moment. While hiding her female identity and promoting fair talent selection, Lin Xiaoman is framed by the prime minister for "fraud" just as she starts investigating embezzlement in the Ministry of Revenue. To her shock, she discovers her "cheating" was actually a plot by the prime minister to make her a laughingstock. But she decides to fight back: using her identity as the "cheating Zhuangyuan," she will tear off the dark court's fig leaf controlled by the prime minister—even if it costs her life, she wants to give poor scholars a way out!
