In a famine-stricken time, A Ruan, an orphan labeled "father-killer," picks up a chubby baby. Miraculously, her barren fields yield grain and her sick mother-in-law recovers—making the baby the village's envied "lucky charm." But bully Zhao Hu accuses the baby of being a "monster" and wants to burn him. Even Ah Chuan, the hunter who misunderstood A Ruan for years (believing she killed his father), can't help protecting them—revealing A Ruan's dad died saving Ah Chuan's father! Just as their misunderstanding clears, Zhao Hu sets fire to the temple. A Ruan tries to rush in with the baby, but Ah Chuan pulls her back.
