A Zhao, a spirit maiden who has guarded the Hall of Eternal Life for 300 years, finally meets Gu Zhaoyan, a general breaking into the hall to steal the Eternal Grass on a snowy night—he needs it to save his dying mentor, while she must uphold the ancestral rule: “Touching the grass destroys the hall.” From drawing swords against each other to falling in love secretly, Gu promises, “I’ll come back to marry you after getting the grass,” but is shot to death by the royal pursuers as he leaves. Holding his cold body, A Zhao hears the Eternal Grass wither inside the hall—her life had long been tied to the grass. Since then, a woman in a red dress has been leaning against the door outside the hall every day, asking: “Did anyone come back today?”
