Newly crowned top scholar Shen Zhaoqing is ordered to marry Su Wantang, the tycoon who dominates Jiangnan's sugar industry. He expects a political marriage of unequal status, but discovers his wife controls half the country's sugar trade—even the imperial kitchen relies on her for sugar. Shen, raised on Confucian classics, despises “money-grubbing merchants,” yet Su forces her way into his official predicaments: she uses business acumen to expose graft in the rotten disaster-relief sugar case, and navigates court factions with her sugar empire. When the arrogant scholar meets the shrewd tycoon, is it mutual resentment or unexpected attraction? Beyond the sweetness of sugar lies not just business tactics, but the secret of two proud hearts drawing closer.
