In a small 1980s town, Lin Wan is a stubborn girl hiding her family's ancestral acupuncture skills. Her childhood sweetheart Chen Mo, a newly discharged soldier, has always been her protector—at seven, he gave her his only fruit candy; at sixteen, he fought off troublemakers for her. But Chen Mo falls into a coma after shielding Lin Wan from falling rocks at a construction site. The old doctor at the clinic says he's “beyond saving,” but Lin Wan digs out her grandfather's medical books. She boils herbs in earthen pots, uses silver needles on his acupoints, and endures neighbors' gossip calling her a “charlatan.” She holds Chen Mo's cold hand and cries: “You promised to see the new fabric at the supply and marketing cooperative with me. This time, I’ll pull you back—trust me, I’m a divine doctor.”
