In the Republic of China, Su Yanqiu, a famous opera actress known as the "Living Yu Ji" (Concubine Yu) for *Farewell My Concubine*, hides a youthful heartbreak with Gu Zhaonian, a young warlord marshal. At 17, she wove a grass ring for him by the roadside as a promise—only for Gu to marry a chamber of commerce heiress and call her a "heartless actress". Yanqiu survived a suicide attempt, turning cold like the "Dead Yu Ji" from the opera. Three years later, Gu traps her by booking 100 performances.
