Liu Yanjun, a failed entrepreneur, never forgot his promise to his late friend—to take care of his sister Lin Xiaoman, who was disabled in a car accident. To raise money for Xiaoman’s leg rehab surgery, he sold his only house, was cornered by debt collectors, and even worked secretly at a construction site. Xiaoman mistakenly thought he wanted to “get rid of the burden” and treated him coldly, until she found her brother’s diary entry: “Yanjun is the one who’ll carry my load.” Only then did she realize Liu Yanjun had given everything for the promise “I’ll hold you up.” When the surgery lights went out, Liu Yanjun clutched his friend’s old keychain and smiled—losing money is fine, but losing a promise is a lifelong defeat.
