Xue Ziqi, the overlooked third prince who just wanted to be an idle royal, is dragged into the "Xuanwu Gate Duel" by the late emperor's will—whoever wins three rounds inherits the throne. His opponent is the ruthless crown prince, and every step of the game hides tricks: In the first round of "seizing the military tally", the crown prince bribes the guards, but Xue Ziqi wins over the veteran with sincerity. In the second round of "the grain shortage case", the crown prince tries to frame him, but he uncovers the truth and gives justice to the people. The third round is the most dangerous—the crown prince threatens him with his beloved's life, but Xue Ziqi smiles: "What the late emperor wanted was never victory or defeat, but the benevolence to rule the world." It turns out the back of the will says "Only benevolence deserves the throne." In the end, he wins the duel with sincerity and becomes the people's "Benevolent Emperor."
