Returning entrepreneur Shen Guoyang comes back to his hometown to develop a resort, only to reunite with his first love Wang Sijin—now the village secretary—who he broke up with due to a misunderstanding. They clash fiercely over the fate of the green willow grove: Shen wants to tear down the trees for construction, while Wang vows to protect the grove that holds the village’s collective memories. The truth behind Shen’s sudden departure abroad years ago is hidden in a letter left by the late old secretary. When the excavator approaches the grove, Wang cries out holding the letter, “Why didn’t you tell me back then?” Shen finally realizes: the “future” he tried so hard to give her is never better than staying with her to guard the “present” green willows.
