Nine-year-old Xiaotang always says "Mom has turned into a box," which makes the neighbors label her a "weird kid without a mom's guidance." Her mom passed away from cancer three months ago, leaving only a locked old wooden box. On her birthday, Xiaotang finds the key her mom hid in a doll's belly and opens the box—inside are 12 letters marked "Open one every birthday" and a pre-recorded voice: "Xiaotang, Mom didn't leave. I just became the wind in the box, blowing out every candle with you." As she hugs the box and cries, the scent of jasmine—Mom's favorite—suddenly drifts in from the window. It turns out Mom hid jasmine seeds at the bottom of the box, which had already quietly sprouted in the balcony flower pot.
